The Best Grill Under $10 I’ve Used

My sister went out and bought this little charcoal grill at Wal-Mart. Right on the box is the price. $9.92! While the grill assembly was very intuitive and requires no tools other then a Philips Screwdriver (for tightening). All of the parts assemble with wingnuts that you can make finger tight. Assembly time is approx 30 minutes. It took me 45 minutes but that’s just me. I bet I can do another one in 20 minutes!

There is a hinge assembly in with the screws and other hardware. It has a pin that looks like a “bobby” pin. I used 2 wingnuts for the hinge which worked really well but there were no screws left over for the adjustable vent covers! I thought the hinge was an assembly tool. Silly me! The grill might not be the cuisinart gr-1 griddler panini and sandwich press but it’s still good!

The design is simple and just looking at the parts tells the tale of how the grill goes together. Which is good because the instructions are illustrated and not always helpful. So a tiny bit of guessing is needed.

The base has 4 collapsible legs so make sure you set the grill on a flat, hard, surface, a place where you will not need to move the grill or slide it around because those legs will collapse. But if you put it right there will be no problems.

cuisinart gr-1 griddler paniniThere is a warming rack which I actually threw away because it wasn’t functional for me but then I retrieved it and I’m going to give it another try.

I used a store brand “light the bag” charcoal. That charcoal was hot enough to cook on four hours after we were so full of hamburgers and hotdogs we could hardly move! Four quarter pound burgers took just about 15 minutes to cook and came out perfect without having to be flipped over. The high domed lid was a perfect baking lid with an adjustable lid vent.

The cooking surface is 175 square inches which is large enough for 4 hamburgers, 4 big pieces of chicken or even a roast! If I was a betting man I’d say you could cook a full sized pie after everything is else is cooked and it would be perfect to have after everyone has digested the main course!

The grill gets 3 out of 4 stars and I recommend it highly! We had a great Bar-B-Que on a glorious day!

Take a close look at the pictures. They will give you an idea on how awesome this little grill is!

mSilica & OSRAM Joint Reference Design

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors showcased a host of new LED illumination solutions at the 2008 Strategies In Light conference and exhibition. On display were working demos of OSRAM’s new Diamond DRAGON® LED and the Advanced Power-Saver® technologies from mSilica Inc., combining high level functionality and high efficiencies with reduced component count.OSRAM’s newly launched Diamond DRAGON is one of the world’s brightest single-chip SMT LEDs (up to 250 lumens) with exceptionally low thermal resistance for general, automotive and industrial lighting applications.  The Diamond Dragon can be driven at 2 amp continuous or 4 amp pulsed which requires a new class of LED drivers, several of which will be on display at the show.

Showcase Advanced LED Subsystems for General Lighting & LED Backlighting

Santa Clara, CA (February 11, 2008) – OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will showcase a host of new LED illumination solutions at the 2008 Strategies In Light conference and exhibition, February 11-13,  at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Booth 206. On display will be numerous working demos of OSRAM’s new Diamond DRAGON® LED and the Advanced Power TopLED® technologies with market ready reference design drive circuitry from Linear Technology, National Semiconductor, and mSilica Inc  combining high level of functionality and facilitating low component count.

OSRAM’s newly launched Diamond DRAGON is one of the world’s brightest single-chip SMT LEDs (up to 250 lumens) with exceptionally low thermal resistance for general, automotive and industrial lighting applications.  The Diamond Dragon can be driven at 2 amp continuous or 4 amp pulsed which requires a new class of LED drivers, several of which will be on display at the show.

Working demos of the  Diamond DRAGON powered by Linear Technologies’ LT3518, a full featured LED driver with a 2.3A current, 45V internal switch that provides a 3000:1 True Color PWM dimming ratio, open LED protection, and a wide input voltage range,  providing stable operation and suitable for automotive and general lighting applications.

A second Diamond DRAGON LED demo powered by National Semiconductor’s NS LM3401 PFET controller driver that can run at up to 100% of duty cycle, which maximizes the number of LEDs being driven off an input rail will also be on display. The LM 3401 also enables very flexible system design and reduces component count as it does not require an output capacitor or compensation.

Also in operation will be a new 2-dimensional backlight demo designed with 160 RGB Advanced Power TopLEDs® driven by mSilica’s MSL3082 8-channel LED Driver on a companion LED load board.  The mSilica driver incorporates Adaptive SourcePower™ technology to control DC-DC power supplies with optimal efficiency, complementing the Advanced Power TopLED’s outstanding performance capabilities for general lighting, LCD TV and monitor backlighting.
